Whether you’re in high school, college, or have a full-time job, you probably have a ridiculously busy life. In order to keep on being amazing in your every day life, it is so important to establish a really lovely night routine. In college, having a night routine has really improved my lifestyle overall. I find myself so much more relaxed after developing a nightly routine to help me unwind. Rather than going straight from the chaos of to-do lists and productivity to sleeping, there should be a period of time in between where you take care of yourself, do things you enjoy, and calm your mind. I just finished up the first week of second semester. One of my goals for 2018 is to make self care a priority, and a nightly routine will help me implement that goal!
Eight Ideas to Create Your Perfect Night Routine
one || take a shower or bath.
I’m a big fan of morning showers, to wake myself up and get a fresh start to the day. However, lately I’ve found night showers to be so relaxing and soothing, especially after completing piles and piles of homework. PS: last week I wrote a post detailing nine winter skincare products to revitalize your shower and keep your skin nourished.
two || pamper yourself.
Part of transitioning into a calmer state of mind is treating yourself. Apply a face mask, paint your nails, lay down and relax. Let the tensions of the day melt off your shoulders, however makes you happy.
three || turn off technology.
Trust me-I’m guilty of staying up late, doing homework, writing papers, or even watching Netflix on my laptop, then collapsing into bed exhausted. Even worse is when I get caught up scrolling through Instagram, Twitter, or other’s blogs when I should be winding down for bed. My advice is to set up a time that you’re going to be done with technology, gradually. For example, I will do my online homework earlier, and promise myself I’ll stop using my laptop by 11. Then, I’ll eventually put my phone on silent, until I need to set up my alarms for the next morning.
four || prepare for the next morning.
If you’re like me and love sleep, you probably will want to set yourself up for an easy and successful morning. Lay out the textbooks or notebooks you need, pack a snack for between classes, and make sure your laptop is charged. Write down reminders of anything you need to accomplish or remember the next day.
five || (quickly) organize your room.
I’m not saying to go all-out and completely clean your room. You’ll feel much more relaxed in a calm space, and a chaotic, disorganized room with stuff everywhere will make your feelings reflect the space. Take a few minutes to put away anything out of place.
six || read a book.
I absolutely believe that reading is perhaps the best way to wind down at night. There’s nothing more lovely than settling in under a fluffy, cozy blanket and slipping into a novel for a while. If you’re looking for something to read, I write book reviews pretty often, and last week published a round-up of eight books I’m looking forward to in 2018. Check that post out here!
seven || light a candle.
Personally, candles are so relaxing. Aromatherapy has been proven to be an effective stress reliever and the atmosphere created in a room by a candle is so nice as well. If you live somewhere that you can’t have candles, or prefer an alternative, try an essential oil diffuser or a wax melter!
eight || make yourself a yummy treat.
At night I really enjoy having a little bit of chocolate and a cup of tea or hot cocoa. I also make sure to drink plenty of water at night so that I don’t get dehydrated over night! There’s such comfort to be found in sipping on a warm drink at night. Pair that with some of the other relaxing activities in this post and you’re golden.
